Morning Dance Class
Nigel Charnock will start the day with giving us a physical dance class, based on his combination of using release technique, action-based partner work, games and energetic physicality. Everyone is welcome to take part, either on the floor or watching.

Master Class: Popular music as part of the scenic representation
In his master class Nigel Charnock will present how he works with mixing the means of music, drama, physical theatre and choreography. He will share with us his choice of using music from CD:s , his process of finding the appropriate sound/track/composition, and what aspects and layers he is looking for. What does opular music and recorded tracks bring to a performance? How can it be used for both form and content? In his own solos Nigel Charnock is primarily working with improvisation. This master class will however focus on the processes and methods he uses when creating commissioned work for dance companies, for which he primarily creates set material. The master class will give us perspectives and input to the working session in the afternoon.

Nigel is a celebrated star performer throughout Europe – a national treasure according to the Arts Council of England, branded the unreconstructed bad boy of physical theatre by London Metro. After founding and successfully collaborating with Lloyd Newson on DV8, Nigel formed his own company in 1995 with the aim of creating a variety of projects across different media. He is constantly exploring his own hopelessly transgressive take on sin and sexuality - and all his work generates Love-Sex-Death narratives that aggressively confront conformity and explode with morbid humour.

In 2003 Nigel was appointed Artistic Director of Helsinki Dance Company (based at Helsinki City Theatre), a role he maintained until November 2005. Each of the 6 productions he choreographed for the 10 talented performers of the company received rapturous responses from audiences and critics.

Over the past decade Nigel Charnock has made and performed a quintet of solos: “Human Being”, “Hell Bent”, “Original Sin”, “Resurrection” and “Frank”. These unique performance experiences in which Nigel’s extraordinary stage presence and combination of talents as dancer, singer, actor and comic, rupture the boundaries of performance, have become internationally renowned, securing rapturous responses from audiences everywhere and international press acclaim. In 2006, Nigel created “Stupid Men”, an improvisation project for four male performers. The piece was commissioned by the Venice Biennale premiering in there in Summer 2007. In 2008 Nigel created a new work for CandoCo Dance Company, for Lousie le Cavalier/Fou Glorieux (ex La La La Human Steps) and for Diversions – the Dance Company of Wales.
