Masterclass: Interpretation as a tool or a method?

How do we conceptualize music and dance in terms of interpretation? How can we be inspired by each other's way of thinking and express ourselves? How can we personally develop our method of interpretation? Cecilia Roos will give us an overview of the understanding of interpretation, how it has changed over the years, how it might differ between dance and music, and where we are today. She will provide us with inputs for discussions and self reflection. Her master class includes seminar, discussions and inputs to take with us in our working sessions and personal work.

Cecilia was appointed Professor of Dance Interpretation at the University College of Dance in Stockholm on January 1, 2008.

She got her education at Balettakademien in Stockholm and at the University College of Dance in Stockholm. Then she studied dance in Paris, New York, London and Rome. She has worked as a dancer and rehearsal assistant to Per Jonsson, Mats Ek, Margaretha Åsberg, Swedish company Vindhäxor, Cristina Caprioli, Kenneth Kvarnström, Björn Elisson, Susanne Jaresand, Reich/Szyber, Birgitta Egerbladh, Tim Rushton, Twyla Tharp and at the Royal Swedish Ballet, Carte Blanche and Folkoperan.

Cecilia is artistic administrator of the creations of the deceased Swedish choreographer Per Jonsson. She has made movies for children and worked as a dancer and choreographer for Stockholms Stadsteater (City Theatre) and Dramaten (National Theatre of Sweden).

She has received grants from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee, The Swedish Academy, the City Council of Stockholm and from the foundations of Carina Ari, Rolf de Maré, and Anders Sandrews. In 2006 she was Guest of Honor at the Dans & Teater Festival Göteborg and was awarded by the Swedish Dance Critics Association.

Cecilia teaches regularly at the University College of Dance in Stockholm, University College of Film, Radio, Television and Theatre in Stockholm and the Royal Swedish Ballet School. In 2005 she wrote her B.A on Dance Interpretation “ Dansarens blick – den inre och den yttre” at the Department for Musicology and Performance Studies at Stockholm University. She has published multiple articles on the subject.

Cecilia has had a couple of commissions of trust like for the Swedish Arts Council and for The Foundation for the Culture of the Future. She is currently a member of the committee for performing artists at the Swedish Arts Grants Committee.

Cecilia is continuously lecturing on interpretation and has as such been invited to the Art’s and Science Festival, The Swedish Intitute for the Working Life, Dance Network Sweden, Dansbiennalen, Dansens Hus Nasjonal Scene for Dans (National Stage for Dance in Norway) and IADE Institute for Art, Development and Education in Finland.

In addition to her professorship at the University College of Dance in Stockholm she is currently founding the training programmes on teaching and choreography at the Academy for Theatre, Film and Dance in Hanoi, Vietnam on behalf of SIDA, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
